The counseling department at Mallard Creek Elementary School envisions that every student will learn and employ good character and healthy life skills, and overcome obstacles that obstruct their academic development so that they may realize their full academic potential and be prepared to become productive citizens of the world.
STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
The counseling program should be designed to address the issues that frustrate or hinder the academic and social success of a student.
Every student can learn. It is up to the adult to find ways to reach the student's intelligence.
Individual student needs and differences should be considered in the planning and execution of the school counseling program.
The counseling program should teach students problem-solving, social and life skills, and empower students to make wise decisions in the future.
Counseling and guidance services should address the holistic student.
The counseling program should be data driven and results oriented.
The counseling program should serve as a school-wide model to exemplify good character.
Guidance services and resources are available to all Mallard Creek students.
The counselor should be committed to making ethical and professional decisions with the well-being of the student in mind.
THE MISSION
The mission of the school counseling program of Mallard Creek Elementary School is to promote holistic student success by advocating, implementing, improving, and supporting appropriate activities, and through stakeholder collaborations on behalf of the students. Through advocacy, leadership, systemic change and collaboration, the school counseling program will provide a comprehensive approach to the academic, emotional, and social health of all students.
WHAT DO SCHOOL COUNSELORS DO?
As your child’s counselor, the most important part of the job is to ensure that students are safe and successful at school. We are concerned about his/her emotional well-being, academic progress, and personal/social development.
The following are provided by the counseling program at Mallard Creek:
Short term individual counseling. Typically, we will see a student 2-6 times about a particular school related problem. We will coordinate appropriate times with your child’s teacher to pull them for counseling. Further recommendations or referrals may be given as needed.
Short term small group counseling. We facilitate groups on various topics throughout the year. Groups are typically in session for six weeks. Selection of group candidates is determined by staff recommendation, student needs and the needs of their peer group.
Classroom guidance lessons. We visit our assigned classrooms to deliver lessons for personal/social, academic and career success. Some topics include conflict management, anti-bullying, career readiness, and academic success.
We work collaboratively with students, parents, administrators and teachers to help students who may be struggling with behavior, social, emotional, and/or academic concerns.
We help to coordinate referrals to outside agencies as needed for students.
